APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY:

Detecting microwave radiation for cosmic microwave background radiation research, though other potential applications include security screening (e.g., at airports) and communications.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Ultrawide frequency band between 30 GHz and 300 GHz
  • Sensitivity to polarization
  • Low noise (10^-18 Watt / sqrt(Hz)) from noise-equivalent power
  • Design for scalable manufacturing

ABSTRACT:

Berkeley Lab scientist Aritoki Suzuki and colleagues have designed and created design files for a microwave radiation detector, the Sinuous Antenna Coupled CMB Detector, that offers several advantages relative to competing detectors as described above.

The Sinuous Antenna Coupled CMB Detector is fabricated on silicon wafers using microfabrication techniques and incorporates superconducting metals such as niobium, aluminum, and manganese-doped aluminum; normal metals such as titanium and palladium; and dielectric films such as silicon
nitride. The design files include detailed layout of metals and thickness of each layer.

DEVELOPMENT STAGE: Ready for manufacture

STATUS: Design files for manufacture. Available for non-exclusive licensing or collaborative research.
