APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY:
- Alternative fuel vehicles
ADVANTAGES:
- Achieves high power density
- Viable, low-cost competitor to all-ceramic SOFCs
ABSTRACT:
Berkeley Lab researcher Michael Tucker has invented symmetric-architecture MS-SOFCs that achieve high power density by optimizing the catalyst infiltration procedure. For details on the fabrication procedure, see the researcher’s publications, noted below.
MS-SOFCs offer several advantages over conventional, all-ceramic SOFCs, including low-cost structural materials, mechanical ruggedness, excellent tolerance to redox cycling, and extremely fast start-up capability. Past challenges to adopting MS-SOFCs such as oxidation of the metal support at high temperatures, the need to sinter stainless steel in a reducing atmosphere, and moderate performance and durability are overcome by the Berkeley Lab MS-SOFC technology.
DEVELOPMENT STAGE: Proven principle.
