APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY:

  • Water Electrolysis
  • Stationary power generation

ADVANTAGES:

  • Enables the deposition of a dense, thin, defect-free, well-adhered electrolyte on a porous electrode
  • Improves the electronic and ionic conduction in the electrode layer

ABSTRACT:

Researchers at Berkeley Lab and United Technologies Research Center have developed a new method of fabricating metal-supported solid oxide cells for water electrolysis and stationary power generation. This fabrication process enables the deposition of a continuous high-quality BZCY proton-conducting electrolyte on a porous electrode without the need for further processing at elevated temperature.

This technology addresses the processing challenges associated with co-sintering the electrolyte and metal support and improves the quality of sintering of the electrolyte at the maximum processing temperature that is acceptable for the metal support.
