APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY:
- Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries
BENEFITS:
- Enhanced low temperature performance without adverse effects.
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW:
Researchers at Berkeley Lab have developed novel electrolyte additives for lithium-ion batteries for improved low temperature performance.
The commercially available additives to the traditional lithium-ion carbonate electrode can enhance low temperature performance of the lithium-ion rechargeable battery without compromising the ambient temperature performance (e.g., 30° C). Battery performance improved by as much as 7%, with capability retention as low as -20 °C. Unlike other approaches to low-temperature performance, this method simply uses less than 1% of commercially available additives in a standard lithium ion carbonate electrode, and is therefore a drop-in technology.
