- Offers more reliable and optimal network performance compared to previous technologies
- Packet route calculation for traffic is routed through a large network based on label stack, such as in segment routing cases and SDN-controlled networks. The segments involved are instructions that are executed on subsequent nodes in the network (e.g., forwarding instructions). However, currently paths are calculated and pushed by network engineers prior to deployment and only updated a few times if something is incorrect.
- Segment routing, a form of computer networking, is a modern variant of source routing that is being developed within the SPRING and IPv6 working groups of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Researchers at Berkeley Lab have used machine learning to learn traffic patterns and perform a path generation by real-time network telemetry (i.e. network health telemetry data including latency, utilization, and loss).
This approach automatically calculates an optimum path for the label stack moving the flow through the network with minimum packet loss and optimal delivery time. The path computation engine will maintain a health table that will be used to recalculate paths periodically.
